IT seems US police chief John Timoney, whom Garda Representative Association general secretary PJ Stone hails as a 'senior and respected policeman' (Irish Examiner, March 25), has seen fit to weigh in on an internal Irish police matter.

I now feel I must also respond from the other side of the pond.

First, the then NYPD Police Commissioner William Bratton (now chief of the Los Angeles Police Department) was the man responsible for introducing such concepts as the CompStat system of tracking crimes, and zero tolerance, which helped to dramatically reduce New York crime - Mr Timoney merely helped to implement the system.
