Public transport in private hands

THE government is set to introduce policies that will have far-reaching effects on the future of the country’s public transport.

Public transport in private hands

The cost of the LUAS project, its effect on road users, and its running by a foreign multinational are just the tip of the iceberg.

Transport Minister Seamus Brennan is set to break up CIE and franchise out 25% of Dublin Bus routes to private companies, as well as effectively dismantle the other CIE group companies.

The public are being told that these moves will dramatically improve the services... that more companies and more competition will mean more buses and trains.

The reality will be very different.

Such policies in Britain proved a disaster, with public transport virtually collapsing and more people being forced into cars.

The railways especially suffered with high profile accidents as a result of safety cutbacks.

A public forum organised by Dublin Bus workers will be held on Tuesday, June 10, in the Teachers Club, Parnell Square, Dublin, at 8pm.

The meetingwill be addressed by, among others, a transport workers’ representative from Britain who has seen at first hand the devastating consequences for workers and the public.

We urge all community groups to come along and find out what will happen if the government sells off our state transport companies.
