Send in the Army

I AM shocked and disgusted at the brutal violence and thuggery perpetrated against the gardaí, journalists, reporters and innocent bystanders on O’Connell Street.

I was further saddened to see the destruction and looting of shops along the way. Such manic and intemperate behaviour was a disgrace to our nation and to all who believed that we were a civilised and mature people. On occasions such as this, we should deploy a military unit to lend their special skills to the support of the gardaí, who are not equipped for battle on our streets.

After all, an army is a large body of men and women organised and trained for warfare on land.

Last Saturday we missed a golden opportunity of showing what a mature and civilised race we Irish are. How sad.
