Rip-off rants are far from nonsense

THE chairman of Anglo Irish Bank, Sean Fitzpatrick, said (Irish Examiner, January 20) there was “no need for the rantings of consumer affairs champion Eddie Hobbs” in relation to rip-off Ireland.

Then he said the country was better off now than it was 15 years ago.

Most people agree with Eddie Hobbs that we have a rip-off culture.

Mr Fitzpatrick also said RTÉ should be made to pay for peddling nonsense and he criticised the media for going for cheap points. Is it nonsense when tourists say Ireland is very costly?

Is it nonsense that most of us take foreign holidays because accommodation, food and drink are far cheaper elsewhere?

Is the country better off now than 15 years ago? On paper, it seems so. People are earning more, more houses are being built and there are more cars on the road. But 15 years ago there was little or no need for mothers to work, one car was the norm and housing was affordable.

Our young people now cannot even afford a deposit on a house.

A fantastic job has been done by Eddie Hobbs and the media.

By the way, congratulations to Mr Fitzpatrick and Anglo Irish Bank on their pre-tax profits of €685m (to end Sept).
