Green Empress breaks duck in Debutante Stakes
Green Empress and Dylan Browne McMonagle (green cap) win the Alpha Centauri Debutante Stakes (Group 2) for trainer Joseph O'Brien
Green Empress pounced late under an inspired drive from Dylan Browne McMonagle to land the Group Two Alpha Centauri Debutante Stakes at the Curragh.
Joseph O’Brien’s filly had run into Sun Goddess on each of her first two starts, finishing second both times and getting to within three-quarters of a length in the Airlie Stud Stakes on her most recent outing.
But she finally got her head in front at the third time of asking after being delivered fast and late, landing odds of 11-4 with a neck victory over stablemate Dancing Destiny.
The highly touted and well-backed 4-6 favourite, Ballydoyle filly Alpha, lacked a turn of foot in the closing stages, finishing a close-up third.
“Her form has worked out very well and Dylan gave her a lovely ride,” said O’Brien.
“I’m really delighted for Prince Faisal to be able to be here. To win the Debutante is very special for us and for him.” Green Empress, given quotes of 16-1 by Coral for next year’s 1000 Guineas, is now set for a step up to Group One level.
O’Brien added: “She had a bit of a setback after her last run so we thought that fitness-wise she probably would need the race today.
“She’ll probably come back here for the Moyglare.” McMonagle told Racing TV: “That was exceptional and she is a very exciting filly. Once I got out she responded so well.
“She has hit the line well and is definitely very exciting for her connections. She has always showed us plenty and we thought the seven furlongs would suit.
“Hopefully she has a bright future. She has loads of speed and gets the seven furlongs well, so the Moyglare would be a good fit for her.”
