Making a meal of our misfortune

I WISH to commend you on your excellent editorial (Irish Examiner, September 17).

Making a meal of our misfortune

The shrinking euro is our main worry. Price increases are a daily occurence and no-one at the top seems to care.

Our Taoiseach and his Soldiers of Destiny were in the luxurious Great Southern Hotel, Killarney, recently on a junket, trying to boost Bertie's ego for a 'yes' vote on EU expansion.

The Government lied their way back to power for five more years with huge salaries, perks and expenses. It's estimated that the latest pay increase for TDs brought the basic salary to roughly €1,500 per week, a jump of 12%.

A 76-year-old pensioner received €258.20 weekly (€144.40 plus €113.80 for his dependent spouse, who, despite having worked within the home for over 43 years, does not have equal rights). Tanaiste Mary Harney, take note.

I was livid to hear Environment Minister Martin Cullen say on RTÉ Radio that there's no such thing as a free lunch; indeed, for him and his cohorts there is. Who paid for the junket in Killarney? We, the people, of course.

Minister Cullen blamed the media for the cutbacks oop's sorry, adjustments.

We saw the arrogant Minister for Finance on RTE News and he had the gall to tell us we must live within our means. All reminiscent of the Haughey era.
