YOU reported that the National Safety Council criticised the Government for its road safety strategy (Irish Examiner, October 20), but both agree the big three are drink, seat belts and exceeding the speed limit.

In reality, tiredness, poor judgment, lack of skill, inattentiveness and mental state are the major causes, as well as excessive speed for the conditions rather than simply exceeding the speed limit.

Only in the case of pedestrian fatalities do they blame carelessness, as well as lack of visibility. They propagate this myth to prevent radical action being taken in deference to the road lobby.
