Careful planning for major town festival

I WRITE on behalf of Kinsale Chamber of Tourism in response to the letter from Brendan Berkeley (Irish Examiner, May 8).

The international Rugby 7s has been staged successfully in Kinsale for 17 years. This year was no exception with a total of 88 teams taking part.

The staging of such a major event involves months of careful planning between the organisers, local gardaí, auxiliary services and tourist interests.

The use of ‘wrist-tagging’ for security and identification of patrons and visitors alike to Kinsale for the weekend has been operated successfully over the years by the rugby organisers and the local vintners. It is the only event in Ireland to be policed in this manner.

The fine weather during the 7s weekend this year attracted record crowds and the general atmosphere was of a good nature.

The council’s cleansing department were on the streets at 6.30am and did a marvellous job within a few hours.

Kinsale tourist and business interests are all too well aware of the importance of events such as the 7s and provided the same level of organisation and co-operation continues to exist between the organisers, local bodies and the gardaí, this event is welcome in Kinsale.
