Hard lesson in safety

CYRIL McINTYRE of Bus Éireann (Irish Examiner letters, November 12) states that “safe operation of buses is ensured by rigorous inspection”.

Hard lesson in safety

As a student who uses this service every day, I don’t agree. On one occasion the drive shaft of our then bus, registered circa 1988, collapsed while we were travelling on a dual carriageway. The bus came to a halt and our driver proceeded to drag the debris off the road.

I do not consider this a “safe operation” of buses. This was a vehicle in the Bus Éireann fleet, not a private contractor. It was not an isolated event. Bus Éireann have given no satisfactory answers when questioned in the past.

As a State body, it is taxpayers who underwrite this sub-standard service.
