Asylum system is unfair

THE UNHCR representative in Ireland expresses himself satisfied that asylum-seekers in Ireland get a fair deal.

Asylum system is unfair

Speaking to your journalist, Noel Baker, he says "we are happy that the decisions being made are accurate and we're not concerned that refugees are being rejected in Ireland".

Unfortunately, Irish citizens are not getting a fair deal in relation to asylum, as rejected asylum seekers are not being removed from the country. Only one in five deportation orders is implemented.

In a recent attempt to deport Nigerians only half of the intended group were deported. The rest had "disappeared into the woodwork".

Others drag out their stay with expensive legal challenges at great cost to the taxpayer.

A legal measure brought in a few years ago to address this has actually had the opposite of its intended effect and is dragging things out terribly.

An asylum system is hugely burdensome on any country and can only be justified if all rejected asylum-seekers are deported. Irish citizens are deprived of their rights if anything else is the case.
