Freedom and human rights not a priority in Iraq

YOUR columnist Rónán Mullen (Irish Examiner, Oct 29) says that recent events in Iraq show the American cause is “honourable”.

Freedom and human rights not a priority in Iraq

Is it honourable to bomb a country on its knees after 10 years of sanctions?

He writes that the US must “establish a system of government that respects people’s basic rights”.

Like the system the Americans established in Chile, perhaps?

This resulted in about 60,000 disappearing under Gen Pinochet.

Or maybe he means the system they established in Columbia where thousands of trade union organisers, civil rights activists and others were murdered.

The US also established “systems of government” in the Philippines (Marcos), Panama (Noriega), Nicaragua, El Salvador, etc.

Rónán concludes that he is afraid if the Americans pull out of Iraq, “core values such as freedom and human rights could get left behind”.

He’s wasting his energy worrying about that.

After all, freedom and human rights are way down the list of American priorities.
