Road barriers a waste of taxpayers’ money

I WISH to protest against the waste of taxpayers’ money on barriers in the middle of part of the Cork-Mallow Road. With the vast sums spent on the new road, the public are entitled to something better.

Road barriers a waste of taxpayers’ money

Prior to the barriers, the road was OK, other than that the engineers lined it unnecessarily with traffic islands and continuous white lines.

Unlike an important junction, these islands are idle 99.9% of the time. Instead, a third lane solely for overtaking and turning right, as in the case of the Watergrasshill-Fermoy road, should be placed on the route.

This could be shared by traffic going in both directions with preference given to opposite sides, say every mile.

Currently, if you were behind a slow-moving vehicle, you have to remain behind as if you were on a county road, with a huge build-up of traffic.

The same authorities have lined a three-lane, two-way road with two broken white lines a little further on, between Rathduff and Blarney, which is illegal and dangerous.

I propose that the ‘Slow Lane Ahead’ be called ‘Overtaking Lane Ahead’ and that motorists be penalised four points if they are in the overtaking lane when the inner lane is clear.

That would mean the middle lane would be idle most of the time, making the main lanes much safer and at the same time leaving room to pass out slow traffic.
