Taken at face value

FIONNÁN Sheehan (Irish Examiner, Oct 2) quotes Mary Harney as saying she had asked the Taoiseach to investigate allegations concerning Ray Burke before appointing him to the cabinet. The Taoiseach informed Ms Harney that he carried out an investigation; in fact, he went up every tree in North Co Dublin, and she accepted his assurances.

I find this hard to understand as Ms. Harney is a highly intelligent woman.

Why did she not investigate the rumours herself or did the lust for power overcome her?
