Pearse’s patriotism had vision and courage

THE opinion poll placing P H Pearse, the 1916 leader, as the most popular choice for a position of honour in a refurbished O’Connell Street, Dublin, is an interesting indication of the high level of appreciation and admiration Irish people hold for our patriots.

Pearse’s patriotism had vision and courage

When we recall the level of unfavourable media coverage of Pearse over the last 20 years and reflect on the full findings, Pearse has a remarkable influence 88 years after his death.

It is an impressive and thought-provoking reflection of current public opinion, which must be recognised by those responsible for the refurbishing of the main street of Ireland's capital city.

Great people in every sphere of Irish society have graced the public stage in many disciplines, yet they are all overshadowed by P H Pearse an educator, Irish language enthusiast and signatory of the 1916 Proclamation.

Pearse, like us all, had human failings, but when our nation needed to assert her right to freedom knowing the risks and consequences, he had the vision, courage and patriotism to lead the way.

Perhaps that is what makes him different, better and greater in the minds of today's generation.
