Traffic management measures at Cork city centre location to facilitate Uisce Éireann works

Uisce Éireann has announced that works are being undertaken to deliver improvements to Cork city's wastewater infrastructure in the Coal Quay area, with the public advised that temporary pedestrian and traffic management measures will be in place.

The water utility company said the works follow on from similar works which took place in Grand Parade in early 2026 and form part of its “ongoing investment in wastewater infrastructure in Cork city”.

The works commenced in early August and will allow access for specialist contractors to the underground pump station located at the Coal Quay, for the removal of redundant equipment, cleaning of the pumping station and removal of historical debris.

The works are being delivered by Ward and Burke Construction Ltd on behalf of the company.

Works are taking place in the Coal Quay area, along Corn Market St and Kyrl’s St.

The project is set to last for approximately eight weeks.

In order to safely and efficiently deliver these works, temporary pedestrian and traffic management measures will be in place.

Uisce Éireann portfolio manager, David Shalloo, said the project will provide "vital improvements to the operation of wastewater infrastructure in Cork city". 

"As was the case in Grand Parade, these works will enable service improvements across the wastewater network. 

"This project will lay the foundation for maintenance and improvement works in the future," he added.

Cork City Council works 

Separately, Cork City Council has alerted the public to a raft of traffic disruptions across the city with stop/go systems and road closures in effect to facilitate improvement works.

Since Monday, two road closures are in place – Magazine Rd and Blackrock Rd.

On Magazine Rd, the closure is in effect from its junction with St Clare's Avenue to its junction with Highfield Avenue.

The closure will also operate from 7am until 7pm and will remain in place until Friday to facilitate large scale watermain upgrade works in the area.

Meanwhile on Blackrock Rd, the road is closed to traffic from its junction with Beaumont Drive to its junction with Church Rd until 5pm on Friday to facilitate the upgrading of public footpaths at the location.

Stop/go systems are in place at a number of locations, including a two-way stop/go on Rochestown Rd from the Passage West greenway car park to Hop Island which is operating from the hours of 7.30pm until 6am until Friday, August 21 to facilitate permanent reinstatement works and on Infirmary Rd in Ballintemple where a six-way stop/go is in place from 7pm to 7am until Friday to facilitate large scale watermain rehab works.
