Let them deliver peace in our time
Perhaps it is because of the extreme defensive positions which they have felt forced to occupy for so long that Mr Adams and Rev Paisley seem unable to lead their followers to a society which peaceful people might describe as normal.
They have every right to stand up for what they believe in and on behalf of their communities.
We have in place a structure, supported by the vast majority of people on both sides of the border, which sets out the possibility of normality for Ireland and which incorporates both sets of beliefs.
From media reports in the North, and indeed from the lack of reporting in many instances, it is clear that people are ready for peace and wish to get on with their lives.
Irrespective of the justness of their cause, in expressing their beliefs Mr Adams and Rev Paisley have stood at the edge of normality for many years. They should acknowledge this fact, if only to themselves.
It is time for them both to embrace normality and peace. It is time for both of them to find some meekness or modesty in dealing with this issue and show us all that they are not arrogant or prideful, that they can lead in peace and that some normality, finally, is within our grasp.
