Anti-war campaigners oppose dictators, too
Firstly, Eoin McMahon (Irish Examiner letters, June 25) states that professional protesters only target the policies of regimes that are capitalist, non-secular, anti-terror and anti-crime while simultaneously remaining silent about socialist, communist or Islamo-fascist regimes.
Dictatorships are abhorred by all right-thinking people and the reasons that administrations like those of Mr Bush are targeted by protesters is because they are behaving in a manner that is consistent with unelected dictatorial regimes, despite the fact that they are democratically appointed.
Secondly, many mistakenly argue that Ireland should remain silent about Bush’s policies for fear of offending American companies which have invested here.
All such businesses are driven purely by profit and they will deal with any country as long as it is in their financial interests to do so.
No American company will be put off dealing with Ireland on a point of principle. Those who believe that corporations are motivated by anything other than the ability to accumulate large hoards of money are very misinformed about the nature of business.
