Golfers get a chance to put the record straight
As of now, I am able to pinpoint 1883 as the beginning for the sport in the southern capital.
Documentary evidence states that the opening game was played near Fota House.
There are references around that time also to British garrisons’ golfing activity at Fermoy and Kinsale.
Research shows that, in the following decade, Rathcooney, Glanmire, Rushbrooke, Mallow, Coachford and the St Ann’s Hill hydropathic centre, near Tower, had golf courses, and indeed clubs, only for each of them to lapse over a period of time.
I have also discovered that some of today’s older clubs were constrained somewhat in compiling their history as authentic information was difficult to attain.
I understand this is still the case, so in appealing to readers I would be delighted to hear from anybody who may possess a golfing annual, newspaper article or golf magazine from 1880 to 1920.
A photocopy would be ideal. With a bit of luck, a complete picture of an historic era may emerge.
