Homelessness is a plight created by society
Scared, alone, desolate, tired and hungry. A page from a Dickens novel? Think again!
For an increasing amount of homeless people, this has become a daily existence in post-modern Ireland.
The emphasis in society is on self and self-fulfilment.
The rich believe they have an absolute right to be shielded from a problem created by their greed. Their crimes are blamed on society. A society they created by their lust for power.
Meanwhile, we have a metaphorical government allowing five hotels costing €20m to lie idle: taxpayers are still picking up the tab for security and maintenance. Surely we could use these amenities, offering poor misfortunes sleeping rough some dignity with a warm place to sleep.
Board members of banks award themselves multi-million euro bonuses; naturally you would not accuse them of being overburdened with a social conscience.
The number of tax advisers being directly linked to the big shots in multi-national land reminds us quite clearly of the two-tier society we inhabit. Looking for salvation from this Government is futile. Vested interests ensure homelessness is here to stay.
