Once a priest, always a priest, says Sinead

I WOULD like to rectify an inaccuracy which you printed concerning myself (Irish Examiner, August 13).

Once a priest, always a priest, says Sinead

Underneath a quote from an interview I gave in Jamaica where I said I would not be alive today were it not for the teachings of Rastafarai, you made the assumption that this means I am a “former priest”.

That label ‘former priest’ is an oxymoron. Once a person is ordained he or she is ‘a priest forever’ and so there is actually no such thing as a former priest.

The fact that I am inspired by the Rastafarai movement, which is not a religion, does not mean I am no longer a priest. In fact, far from that being the case, it was the Rastafarai movement which inspired me to be ordained.

I remain very much a priest and will be a priest forever, no matter what anyone makes of it but myself and the Holy Spirit.
