British Embassy responds to fees

I read with interest Mr and Mrs Joe Walshe’s letter entitled “Going nowhere at the Embassy”, published in your August 22 edition.

British Embassy responds to fees

It would clearly be inappropriate to comment on specific visa applications lodged at this Embassy. But I would like to address the suggestion that our guidelines on the payment of visa fees are unclear.

We issue around 10,000 visas and passports each year, and place the greatest importance on ensuring that our customers have clear information on how to apply and pay for our services.

Our web site at www.britishembassy.ie contains comprehensive information on both the application process for visas and passports, and on the relevant fees for each category.

The web site also makes clear (and has always sought to make clear) that customers wishing to submit their applications by post should send in the additional postage fee so that we can return their documents to them securely by registered post.

Incidentally, our postage fee for the return of documents is 5 and not 4 as quoted in the Walshes’ letter, as it had to rise at the beginning of May to reflect the earlier overall rise in the An Post rates.

This change was, of course, reflected in our web pages at the time.
