We are not alone in defence of the unborn

BEFORE Alex Marshall (Irish Examiner letters, August 13) seeks to defend the Irish Family Planning Association’s campaign for abortion in Ireland, he should inform himself more fully.

We are not alone in defence of the unborn

Firstly, Ireland is not alone in Europe in defending the rights of the vulnerable unborn child. Malta also prohibits the deliberate taking of such human life.

A large number of European states where abortion is permitted are now, in some form or another, seeking to reduce its availability.

Secondly, Mr Marshall is apparently unaware that Ireland, according to UNICEF, is the safest place in the world for pregnant women - unlike his native USA. It should be noted also that many maternal deaths in the USA are attributable to complications from so- called “safe legal abortions”.

The IFPA’s proposals for widespread abortion are outdated given the progress in science and medicine.

The use of ultrasound, foetal heart monitoring, and fetoscopy has greatly increased our understanding of the development of the unborn child.

It is no longer possible to justify the IFPA’s proposals despite what Mr Marshall may wish.
