Paisley’s agenda is driven by hatred

ED MOLONEY (Irish Examiner, October 1) might want to ask what Ian Paisley’s agenda is in relation to the peace process and IRA decommissioning.
Paisley’s agenda is driven by hatred

To find historical evidence (to add to the abundant evidence over the summer) he need go no further than a book called ‘Paisley’ by none other than Ed Moloney himself (with Andy Pollak).

Moloney and Pollak detail the core elements of Paisley’s world view that guide him to this day: politics is simply a branch of his religious crusade against Roman Catholicism and ecumenism, the IRA, the Irish Government and any Protestant appeaser are seen as a tentacle of ‘Romanism’.

He will associate with loyalist paramilitaries when it is expedient and drop them when it is electorally embarrassing. Paisley hates the unionist establishment almost as much as he hates any form of Catholic.

He wishes permanently to replace the Ulster Unionist Party and is prepared to see the peace process falter in his ambition to be the leader of unionism.

We are now, however falteringly, trying to create the conditions for sustainable peace. Ed Moloney should ask whether Paisley or the DUP are up to the challenge. The rest of us could ask whether Ed Moloney is up to the challenge.
