Weather put a damper on Cashel air display

I MUST respond to the letter from Richard O’Brien of Cashel headlined ‘Air display goes into free-fall over the Rock’ (Irish Examiner, August 13).

Weather put a damper on Cashel air display

It just goes to show you can’t please all of the people all of the time, especially when they get something for free.

I attended the event and I won’t pretend that everything went to plan, but then it was a miserable day with rain and strong winds.

Such weather conditions are not conducive to flying.

Mr O’Brien should have known that the wind was strong enough to blow over a number of the markers the pilots flew through more than once. Under the circumstances I think they did well to get off the ground for one run of the course.

The sponsors, Red Bull, provided a full programme of events on their website before the event, so I’m surprised Mr O’Brien didn’t know what to expect.

Being an air race, a large part of the programme was reliant on good weather. I don’t see how the sponsors can be blamed when the weather prevented these events from going ahead.

It was a very long wait before any flying took place, and I can empathise with anyone trying to keep children amused. However, did it not strike Mr O’Brien that soaking wet bouncy castles loaded with children in strong winds could have disastrous consequences.

Overall, a disappointing day out, but it was the best that could be expected in the circumstances. I’d love to see the event return in fair weather.
