Medical indemnity is not an unholy mess

WE do not agree that the arrangements for medical indemnity for private practitioners are “an unholy mess born of bad business” (Irish Examiner, May 20).

Medical indemnity is not an unholy mess

It may be unfortunate for the Medical Defence Union (MDU) that they apparently cannot gather enough in premium income to meet the insurers’ requirements, but this is really a matter for the MDU and their commercial insurance partner.

The Medical Protection Society (MPS) has provided indemnity on a not-for-profit, discretionary basis in Ireland for over 100 years and will continue to do so as long as our members wish us to.

In that time, I am not aware of any Irish doctor who has been let down by MPS when facing a clinical negligence claim. With no shareholders, no commercial partner pulling our strings and funds assessed as sufficient by independent actuaries to cover all claims, including those yet to be brought, we can act in our members’ interests and with a continued commitment to the Irish medical and dental professions.

We believe our subscriptions remain affordable for Irish doctors and dentists. Maintaining discretion provides MPS with the freedom to help both healthcare professionals and their patients.
