Forget reform, just abolish the Senate

IT was with surprise that I heard a sub-committee has been formed to consider the possibility of Senate reform. In 1979 there was a referendum on the university seats in the Senate — despite being passed by 92% of the valid poll, it has not been implemented.

Shortly after her ascension to the Senate, Mary O’Rourke stated in a radio interview that in her entire time on the cabinet, the topic of Senate reform never arose.

This does not inspire great confidence that this sub-committee will come up with anything that could be remotely be called reform. However, I hope this sub-committee will consider offering to the people the option of abolishing the Senate.
