McCreevy’s chance to take the driving seat

IT was heartening recently to hear former finance minister and current European commissioner Charlie McCreevy declare that he would not allow vested interests to prevent European banks from entering the Irish mortgage market.

In the wake of this declaration on behalf of consumers, can we now expect him similarly to move against the vested interests that keep the cost of motor vehicles artificially high in Ireland when compared to the prices paid by our neighbours throughout Europe?
