Bush and Blair ended a murderous regime

SINCE time immemorial, the doubters have always demanded signs and portents, like stars falling from heaven, to bolster their faith and as a litmus test of the good authority of the one expected to perform miracles. And so it has proved with Iraq.

Bush and Blair ended a murderous regime

The WMDs (wonders, miracles and demonstrations of power) demanded by Claire Short and Robin Cook (and letters to the Irish Examiner, June 2), fall into this category.

Is it not enough that Saddam’s regime was a graveyard for the opposition, or that he led the world a merry dance for years?

Or that, to the very last, his troops came dressed for biochemical warfare?

Who can demonstrate impeccable credentials but God alone? Can Putin or Chirac, or any of those pointing the finger, long or short.

To give Bush and Blair their due, they never claimed to be miracle workers but, in the end, they were the only ones willing to call Saddam’s bluff.

If he didn’t have WPDs, then he made a good job of hiding that, too.
