Why more pups when we have so many dogs?

I WAS shocked by the article on puppy farming (Irish Examiner Farming, November 11).

Why more pups when we have so many dogs?

I find it hard to believe anyone would encourage puppy farming when more than 20,000 healthy dogs are put down each year.

I have been told that dogs at the dog pound in Cork are put down after five days because there are so many of them and not enough homes can be found.

Recently I spoke with a lady who runs a rescue centre for dogs in Dublin. Her words have stayed with me: “If people saw the numerous tragic cases that I see they would never buy from a dog breeder when so many dogs need rescuing.”

While I am sure there are reputable breeders I feel your headline ‘Don’t be put off puppy farming as a profitable rural enterprise by tales of cruelty’ misses the point.

Even if there was no cruelty from breeders it is still irresponsible to keep bringing more dogs into the world when so many already need homes.

Anyone seeking a dog should go to a rescue home.
