Childminder tax credit under consideration, but not set in stone
This article appears to be based on remarks attributed to the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform in Athlone on Monday last.
Both the headline and the opening paragraph baldly state that women who mind children will get a tax disregard of €10,000.
However, there is no corroborating quote in the article from the minister.
Perhaps this is because he said no such thing.
What the minister did in the course of a reply to a question was to set out a wide range of measures which the Government is considering.
He outlined that one of the options under consideration included the question of a tax credit or disregard of up to €8,000 or €10,000.
The quote at the end of the article (“Without giving away budget secrets, one of the things we are looking at is where a woman could earn up to €8,000 to €10,000 for looking after a neighbour’s child as well as their own child, without damaging their taxation or social welfare status”) accurately reflects this.
But he most certainly did not say that any measure would happen or was likely to happen.
