Richard Harris – from Camelot to limbo

AS a Limerick man, I could never understand why the late great Richard Harris wasn’t granted the freedom of his native city.

Richard Harris – from Camelot to limbo

A condition is that it has to be unanimously agreed by the city fathers. In Richard’s case, it would appear that there were at least two dissenters.

On November 25, 1964, Kenneth Kaunda, President of Zambia, was admitted as an honorary freeman. We know now what kind of a person he turned out to be.

As the freedom of the city cannot be bestowed posthumously on the acknowledged Irish prince of the cinema, I humbly suggest that the new theatre located at the Limerick Institute of Technology be named in his honour. This would be a most fitting tribute to a man who dearly loved his native city. So come on city fathers, it’s about time that we broke the curse of St Munchin.
