Moral standards don’t depend on religion

IN his column on Christian Europe, Rónán Mullen (Irish Examiner, December 22) referred to George Weigel and his belief that some of Europe’s problems stem from the fact that there has been a general falling away from Europe’s Christian past.

It is easy to look back with rose-tinted glasses and see only the good that religion brings.

All to often we conveniently forget the horrors that were justified in the name of Christianity.

The many inter-faith conflicts that are spread across our own history were started in the name of religion and there was little tolerance shown by the so-called men of the faith.

Tolerance and a high moral standard do not depend on belief in any particular religion. We are better off without any reference to Christianity in the European constitution.

In the long run it will ease our relations with the growing non-Christian powers in China, India and the Middle East. It is time that we put religion behind us.

As a society we have to grow up sometime. The sooner, the better.
