Well done - we’ve cleaned up our act

SOME time ago when posters saying “Welcome to Cork, please excuse the litter” appeared in the city, I was quick to write to you to agree with the sentiments expressed.

Well done - we’ve cleaned up our act

As a tour guide I had often uttered these exact words while introducing visitors to my beloved Cork.

Earlier this season I introduced some American visitors to our fair isle - 13 days travelling through Galway, Clare, Cork, Killarney and Limerick. They have thoroughly enjoyed every second in the glorious south-west region.

These are well-travelled people and, for most, the trip to Ireland would be one of four holidays they enjoy in a year. On our farewell night all visitors agreed they would consider the region they had visited to have been litter-free and the toilet facilities they frequented during their stay in hotels, guesthouses, pubs or public facilities were most impressive.

These remarks coming from such seasoned travellers were certainly complimentary and most certainly deserve mentioning.

I compliment Dr Tom Cavanagh of Irish Business Agains Litter and the local authorities.
