Out spiritual heritage goes into the skip

FAIR play to Cllr Noel Collins who is “carrying the cross” for Cork county council (Irish Examiner, April 26).

Out spiritual heritage goes into the skip

I’m sure I was not alone in being disgusted at the revelation that somebody involved in renovating the council chamber saw fit to throw a crucifix into a skip.

This unconscionable act of disrespect was compounded by the comments of Cllr Peter Kelly who objected to the reinstatement of the crucifix in the new council chamber.

Cllr Kelly said: “What we have to realise is that there is a substantial number of non-Christians now in our community.”

Ireland is still a Christian community and there can be no serious objection to a symbol of that Christianity in the chamber of our local democracy.

To say otherwise is to take political correctness a step too far. What next? Will Cllr Kelly wish his constituents a ‘Happy Holiday’ instead of a ‘Happy Christmas?’ Will he even be tempted to face Mecca while his fellow councillors engage in the traditional morning prayer? I am sure the members of other religious communities living in Cork would not object to the hanging of a crucifix in County Hall.

I’m sure they would be upset that symbols such as the crucifix could be discarded with such disrespect. It must be even more daunting for members of other communities to consider integration into a society that is happy to cast aside its own values at a whim.
