MEP’s stance not in line with policy

I WELCOME the statement from Fianna Fáil MEP Seán Ó Neachtain highlighting the unethical funding of embryo research by the EU.

However, while this is welcome it is in total contrast to Government policy. It is ridiculous for the Government to try to blame the EU for actions that the Government itself has taken.

In September the Government went against the Irish constitutional protection of life from conception when it voted to fund destructive embryo research in the EU. This fact was known by all Government representatives at EU and national level.

The Government and its MEPs must either be in agreement to vote against EU funding of destructive embryo research or stop misleading the public.

The game-playing duplicity of being in government and opposition at the same time must stop because this is a matter of life and death to the child embryo.

The Government-appointed EU commissioner, David Byrne, did not publicly uphold Ireland’s constitutional position when the EU commission voted to approve funding of research on human embryos and embryonic stem cells earlier this year.

If the Government is serious about upholding our constitution, then let the Taoiseach clearly state that Ireland does not approve of this type of funding.
