Pushy protest at show missed the point
I was raised as a Catholic with a firm Catholic education and so I am well aware of the Christian doctrine. My bafflement at the protest is not due to ignorance of the religion concerned.
The musical portrays Jesus as a good, kind person who gave of his time to all those in need. According to the musical he was humble, caring and anti-violence. It portrays Jesus as human, which he was. Does this bear no relation to Christian Churches’ teachings? Jesus’s part of the world was stricken with violence and struggles for power, as it is today.
Nowhere in the text of Jesus Christ Superstar does it suggest or imply that Jesus was a “confused maniac” as Mr O’Donovan so inaccurately put it.
If you opened your eyes you would see that the thing you are protesting against is celebrating what you think you are defending.
Finally, I did find it pushy to be handed flyers telling me I was blasphemous to see this musical. Respectfully, I don’t think Mr O’Donovan would appreciate it if I stood outside his place of worship and told him all the things that are wrong with his idea of religion.
