‘Jungle justice’ is not confined to the IRA

WHAT’S all the hullabaloo about the IRA’s “jungle justice”, as your political correspondent Harry McGee called it?

‘Jungle justice’ is not confined to the IRA

In 1984, an RUC man was acquitted of the murder of Seamus Grew. Mr Justice McDermott praised him for his sharp-shooting!

In 1982, the RUC killed three unarmed men. The policemen were left walk free from court by Mr Justice Gibson who commended them "for bringing the deceased to the final court of justice".

PSNI chief constable Hugh Orde claims to have been shocked by the recent IRA statement.

However, last summer he said he "would have done the same" in relation to the Loughall ambush. That is, he would have called in the SAS to execute an active service unit which was blowing up an unmanned RUC station.

The North's top policeman has no problem with "jungle justice" as long as it's carried out by his own men not the IRA.
