My grandfather fell with the Munsters

I AM trying to build up a picture of the people who came in contact with my grandfather, William Healy, at the time of his death in France during World War I.

I am seeking, in particular, information on soldiers who fought alongside him when he was killed on October 14 near Neoux-Les-Mines, a small town in northern France.

He was a soldier in the fourth Royal Munster Fusiliers and the two people I am looking for information on were his sergeant and his chaplain, both of whom wrote to my grandmother after his death.

The sergeants name was Cowie, with the first initial J or F, 2nd Batt., Machine Gun Detachment, RMF.

The chaplain, I believe, was named as L. Whitfield, RC chaplain to the 1st Brigade.

I am assuming that both men came from Munster, but that may not be the case.

Any information about these two men, or indeed any information about that period of time or place, would be greatly appreciated.

I can be contacted on 087-7681282 or email: sean9@iolfree.ie
