Numbers game and the law of probability

PATRICK J CARROLL’S letter on what he called ‘unlikely’ selections of Lotto numbers (Irish Examiner, June 25) shows a disregard for the basic laws of probability.

Numbers game and the law of probability

He mentioned that the numbers drawn on June 18 (9, 10, 23, 24, 34, 35) could only be picked by magic.

In reality, the probability of any six numbers coming out, whether they are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, or any other combination, is exactly the same (specifically 1 in 5,245,786).
