Big screen values
It is surely more realistic for adults to examine what it is in ourselves and our society that leads to such perverse and violent behaviour.
While the Soham families grieve, we have newspapers proclaiming Anthony Hopkins’ latest venture, “getting his teeth into another meaty role, the prequel to Silence of the Lambs”.
The elevation of Hannibal Lecter from vicious, serial-killing cannibal to cuddly, loveable rogue, whose murders, particularly in the sequel, Hannibal, were played for laughs, attracted some criticism at the time.
From Hell, the latest movie depiction of the gruesome deeds of Jack the Ripper, was similarly soft-sold to huge audiences.
We should take responsibility for where our real-life villains get their twisted sense of right and wrong.
