Stamp of disapproval

THE decision by An Post to issue a stamp to mark the 90th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme is regrettable. This is not to suggest that those Irish who fell at the Somme should be forgotten.

Indeed, it is proper that appropriate public ceremonies be held to commemorate the many thousands who went away and never returned.

It is for this reason that the Government has set aside a national day of commemoration every year to honour those Irish who died in all wars, including service with the UN.
