Give 50-somethings a chance

I AM a 52-year-old scientist (Natural Sciences, TCD, 1974). I have been unable to get suitable employment in Ireland with the exception of a stint in AFT Carlow in 1976.

Give 50-somethings a chance

Having reared my only child I decided last year to upgrade my skills by doing a course in applied biology at Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa in Cork.

Again I couldn’t get employment, despite the fact that Cork is awash with chemical companies. I am qualified to work as a laboratory assistant.

“Thank you for your CV, Mrs Dickson. I’m afraid we have no suitable vacancies at the moment. However, if something should arise, we will have your details on file...” That’s the last I hear.

I have basic computer skills and three years’ experience as a national school classroom assistant, but no employment followed from that.

FÁS suggested doing the ECDL. I am signed on for this month. After all my efforts, I am not hopeful.

Despite what some employers think, I am not looking for twice the salary of those in their 20s. Neither am I over the hill. I am a lively, hard-working, conscientious individual who won’t be calling in sick on Mondays with a hangover. Give us 50-somethings a chance.
