Stretching the borders of our democracy

THERE are a few minor discrepancies in Philip J Crosbie’s logic, as expressed in his support for compulsory voting in a recent letter to the Irish Examiner.

Multinationals are as free as bright young students to decamp to foreign climes when the going gets tough, or when the grass is that little bit sweeter.

And compulsory voting should only be enacted when exiles like himself are forcibly repatriated to help sort out the mess. Failing that, I’m sure he’d be happy to fund an initiative to give migrants the vote, with the provision that there be ‘no representation without taxation.’
