Shocking admission by health spokesperson
Speaking on RTÉ, Ms Mitchell admitted she didn't know, and didn't want to know, about the case. She said that she "made a particular point of not trying to find out."
This is a shocking admission for any politician, but for a major party's spokesperson on health, it defies understanding.
She waffled on about the need for chief medical officers to record trends and the need for accountability in the health board system.
Well, Olivia, the trends are clear.
Ireland's youth have woken up to the truth about abortion and they are growing more pro-life by the day. Abortion is certainly a political hot potato.
On the issue of accountability, I believe health boards who have taken children into care are legally responsible for their health and welfare.
I agree with Ms Mitchell on the need for accountability and that is why I cannot understand why she doesn't want to find out if this child became pregnant while in the care of the health board and, if so, what action is being taken to ensure that it doesn't happen to other young people in care.
Her attitude doesn't make sense not even political sense, unless there is something else going on.
Ms Mitchell is concerned about the life of the child being marred and she is adamant that "it is far from ideal that children have to travel abroad for an abortion."
Is this lady for real?
She is Fine Gael spokesperson on health and she doesn't know that abortion is bad for the health of both mums and babies, no matter where it is carried out.
Babies die and mums are hurt. Come into the third millennium, Olivia, and get off the fence.
