GAA may be facing a claims nightmare

I WAS glad to see that Judge William Earley gave Down footballer James McCartan a way out of a conviction by paying money to charity.

But I am sad to see that it has come to the point where the GAA has finally caught up with modern society and its ‘suing culture’. If James McCartan had been convicted, no GAA player - club or county - would have been safe as a consequence.

The big-wigs at Croke Park should have not allowed it to come to this. The victim in this case was badly injured and lost out financially, but the GAA should have compensated him.

Future cases will arise from this, followed by fraudulent claims, and the price of player insurance will go up.

It may well get to the stage where people won’t play for fear of getting sued.
