A practical measure that works

Preliminary figures prove that the measure is working, and any move that helps reduce the main cause of carnage on our roads and motorways is welcome.
Despite an initial reticence towards it, the gardaí should see the benefits accruing from having motorists exercising greater caution. Given that there may still be quirks to be eliminated from the system, any further training or resources the gardaí need to make to be as effective as possible must be provided.
The points system is about road safety, and while much still remains to be done, it is a solid starting point. It is also a timely reminder about greater caution and care needed on the roads with Christmas, one of the most dangerous times of the year, just around the corner.
Transport Minister Seamus Brennan, who launched the scheme, must also deliver on a promise he made on that occasion. He said he would insist on motor insurance companies giving due credit to careful drivers, along with penalising those who attract points for speeding.
The points system is in place to encourage greater safety on our roads. The insurance companies cannot use it selectively for their own exploitative purposes.
