Drift netting - Enforcement of salmon quota needed
Financial hardship for the commercial fishing sector must be addressed properly, and rehabilitative steps to preserve the species must be effectively policed.
Reassuringly, Marine Minister John Browne announced yesterday that recommendations from the National Salmon Commission had been adopted, and that an independent group would be appointed to examine the implications of the new regulations for the commercial sector from next year onwards.
He also said that the quota for wild salmon for commercial fishermen and anglers would be reduced this year in line with the recommendations.
This is important, but more important is that such measures be strictly enforced, otherwise they would be meaningless.
Equally important, and something which the minister recognises, is that adequate compensation be forthcoming in the commercial sector to ensure the overall strategy is effective.
The Government has declared its intent with the appointment of a special commission to consider the implications for the commercial sector, and it is self-evident that to end netting would be extremely beneficial.
