Egg prices have been a rallying cry in the US since Donald Trump made it a campaign issue. Clodagh Harrington explains how this staple has become so politically relevant

The US plans to import up to 100m eggs to address shortages.

The price of eggs has risen dramatically in recent years across the US. A dozen eggs cost US$1.20 (€1.10) in June 2019, but the price is now around US$4.90 (with a peak of US$8.17 in early March).

Some restaurants have imposed surcharges on egg-based dishes, bringing even more attention to escalating costs. And there are also shortages on supermarket shelves.
