IT FELT as if Cynthia Longfield, aka Madam Dragonfly, was present to mark the centenary of the St George expedition, the voyage that transformed this enthusiastic amateur, of Cork and London, into a professional scientist and explorer.

Her butterfly net, photographs, and diaries were on display at the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin, on Tuesday, along with the “insect killing bottle” she crafted from a portion of one of the sails of the St George.
