As television moments go, it was quite a big one. Early morning in Washington DC, and away from spying eyes, Gunnery Sergeant Nicholas Brody performs some rudimentary DIY in his garage before washing his hands and feet. Raising the shed door a little to let the dawn light in, he unfurls something like a yoga mat and lays it horizontally on the ground, facing it east towards the emerging sliver of morning sun. Trim and groomed like every good marine, he raises both hands to his ears, before quietly uttering the words “Allahu Akbar”. Then, Brody drops to his knees, his forehead touching the head of the mat, his palms faced down upon the ground, continuing his prayer in Arabic. It is the penultimate scene in episode two of Homeland, and the moment we learn, without any doubt, that Brody has been turned.
